Training
A crossing of Greenland’s icecap is an exciting but challenging proposition and as such we place great emphasis on prior preparation and training.
Initial Race Meeting Weekend: Devon, UK
Date: November 26th – November 28th
This weekend includes a thorough briefing on all aspects of the race and is an ideal opportunity to clear up any final questions you may have. This weekend will be the first time all the competitors will be together, and provides an opportunity for those who where unable to make it to the open day, to talk and meet those who where there and get up to speed on the race. It is also a chance to meet your race directors and support crew, train with your team and be completely clear about what you are stepping into. We will cover all of the topics discussed briefly on the open day again, but in more depth and where possible in a practical manor with opportunities to ask as many questions as you wish.
We will cover the following: Navigation & communication, Clothing techniques and management, Camp management, Cold weather injuries and medical information, Fitness and Training, Funding and Admin.
Compulsory Cold Weather Training package: Location TBC (Finland or Switzerland)
Date: January 27th – 1st February
The cold weather training package will take place in Finland or Switzland, which in winter provides the perfect training location to prepare for Greenland. This gives you an invaluable opportunity to “test drive” your clothing, equipment and sleeping systems. More importantly, it gives a taste of the mental and physical challenges that lie ahead.
This package provides the opportunity to put everything previously demonstrated and discussed back in the UK, into action in a cold weather environment. In addition we will concentrate on skiing techniques, sledge and harness techniques, pacing and traveling systems, glacier travel, crevasse safety and extraction, use of firearms and flares as well as practical navigation skills using snow features, wind direction and sun.
